Fall Drawdown of the Lake Nov. 5th - Nov 13th

First Light Power will drawdown Lake Lillinonah on Saturday, November 5, 2011 through Sunday, November 13, 2011. The elevation of the lake will be 190 ft.

Lake Level To Be lowered to 187 Level ahead of Forcasted Rains

Lake Lillinonah will be lowered by First Light Power starting Thursday morning. The lake will be lowered 9 ft to the 187 level. Forcasted heavy rains of 2-3 inches over the next 4 days will produce large inflows into the lake.

Public ramps may not be usable at this level.

The lake appears to have reached its low level 186' this morning. Public access ramps are not usable at this level.

There is considerable debris in the lake from the flood waters. Navigate with care and at reduced speeds. It is advised not to navigate waters in low visibility.

 

Lake Level Is On The Rise

First Light and Power has started to raise the lake as of last night. At the current rate the boat ramps should be useable this weekend.

 

 All caution should be taken in navigating Lake Lillinonah, due to the high about of debris in the lake from flood waters.  Use lower speeds at all times. Navigation in low visibility conditions is not recommended. Be aware much of the debris is below the surface and not easily sited.   

 

Irene's Continued Impact on Lake Lillinonah - Lake Levels will Remain Low

Due to continued high flow rates of the Housatonic River into Lake Lillinonah the lake level will remain at its low level until the Housatonic subsides from its current flood stage. It is anticipated that the lake will be at its current low level through the Labor Day weekend.  

Be aware that there is a large about of debris flowing into the lake from flood waters. Much of the debris is below the surface of the water and not visible, making navigation extremely hazardous.

Even after lake levels are returned to normal levels there will still be a large amount of debris in the lake. Navigate with extreme care, lower your speed, return to your dock or trailer prior to dusk or during low visibility.  

Hurricane Irene - Hurricane Watch Issued Lake leven is being lowered to minimum pond

Currently hurricane Irene is forecasted to directly hit Connecticut. First Light is beginning to lower Lake Lillinonah this evening Thursday August 25th and will continue to lower the lake through Sunday, when the lake will be at the lowest level. The lake will be lowered 10 feet.

 It is recommended that residences on the lake take all precautions, by removing their boats from the water if possible and securing their docks.

The lake will remain lowered until food waters diminish.

 The weather service is predicting

  • Timing: Conditions deteriorate Saturday night. Strongest winds Sunday. Lingering strong winds possible Sunday night into early Monday in New England. 
  • Possible impacts: Widespread trees downed, power outages, particularly near the coast. Potential for some structural damage in strongest gusts near center of Irene
  • Timing: Heavy rain may arrive ahead of Irene's center Saturday morning along the Delmarva Peninsula, later Saturday in New Jersey and Long Island, and early Sunday morning in New England. Heavy rain may continue through Sunday afternoon in Long Island and NYC metro, and through Sunday night or early Monday morning in parts of New England. 
  • Potential impacts: Not simply urban flash flooding, but more widespread flash flooding with rapid rises on small creeks and streams. Minor to moderate flooding of some mainstem rivers and tributaries.

Save the Lake Day !

June 18th 9AM - 1PM  is Save the Lake Day. Volunteers will meet at the route 133 boat launch in Bridgewater. Gloves, and garbage bags will be provided. Boats are needed. There will be food and fun for all volunteers.  more information

Proposal for USGS Water Quality Study

A proposal was received and Approved by LLA from the USGS for a water quality study at a cost of $19,000 which they propose that LLA share in half of the cost of $9,500.  USGS proposes to test 4 sites in mid-summer to coordinate with the cycle of power generation, with one profile before and one after power generation.  Sampling would include vertical velocity, nutrient sampling, and take bottom sediment for phosphorus loading.
